The city of Braga

Just as people did in the Renaissance, enter Braga by the Porta Nova archway. It is here that the keys to the city are kept - keys to a thousand year-old city whose monuments serve as reminders of the awesome power once wielded by its bishops. Back in Roman times, emperor Caracala raised Bracara Augusta to the status of capital of Galécia, now Galicia. After the Romans came the Sueves, Visigoths and Moors before the Christians took possession in the 11th century. Braga’s cathedral is the oldest in the country, a fact reflected in the popular saying "as old as the Braga Se" to refer to anything that has withstood the test of time. The city’s ecclesiastical power, in medieval times commonly associated with the sword, extended out across the kingdoms of Spain and Portugal. Around the Braga Cathedral Se, monuments were added with the passing of time. In the 16th century, archbishop Diogo de Sousa, impressed with the Rome of Pope Julius II, set about creating the decorative grace of the Renaissance. Later, the exuberance of the Baroque period would result in other equally splendid buildings. But city has reminders of all eras, such as a mid-street medieval tower, or window shutters designed to hide the female form or a Rocaille palace that looks like a Luis 15th commode. In more recent times, the opening of the University and the quality of the contemporary architecture has generated a youthful influx as well as all the light, colour and unpredictability of the modern world.

A walking tour through the historic centre of Braga

Any stroll around the centre, along the route traced by the axis formed by Rua Dom Diogo de Sousa and Rua do Souto, provides an insight into the historic currents that have shaped the life of this city as well as the ecclesiastic influence over its development and architecture. Although there were substantial changes in the 16th century, there are still examples of the medieval layout including remains of the walls, the towers and the city gates. As from 1505, archbishop Diogo de Sousa set about developing Braga putting into practice his innovative plan influenced both by renaissance learning and Italian fashions. More imposing are the examples of Baroque, embellishing the palaces and monuments built on the orders of archbishop Rodrigo de Moura Teles. A day is nowhere near enough to visit all the monuments included on the route, but each can opt for what proves most attractive on the itinerary.

Local Gastronomy - Cuisine specialities

Whilst Braga is already a well-known cultural centre, it is also important for its cuisine. The city is famous for the treatment given to its dishes, which makes them different from everything else that is to be found in the country's northern region.

If you're fond of soups , choose the Canja Olhuda (Chicken Broth) or the Sopa de Nabos (Turnip Soup), or perhaps taste the Sopa de Lavrador (Vegetable Soup) or the famous Caldo Verde (Cabbage Soup with spicy sausage ).

If you like fish , cod is the most popular dish. Try the Bacalhau Recheado (Stuffed Cod), Bolinhos de Bacalhau (Cod Cakes), Pataniscas (Fried Cod mixed with eggs and flower) or the delicious Bacalhau Fr ito (Fried Cod).

If you prefer meat , you will enjoy the Vitela com Batatas Loiras e Arroz Seco (Veal, potatoes and rice), the Cabrito or Perna de Porco Assada (Roast Kid or Leg of Pork) and, if you wish to sample some typical dishes from the Minho, you should try the Rojões (crisp grilled pork meat) and the Papas de Sarrabulho (a dish made out of pig's blood). Finally, you can always try the Pica no Chão , a dish of rice and chicken, and the Bucho (stuffed pig's belly), a dish which is typically from Guimarães, distinguished by the particular way in which it has been stuffed.

Amongst the sweets and puddings , bequeathed to us by the nuns of the Convento de Santa Clara, attention is drawn to the Rabanadas (slices of fried bread dipped in egg), Mexidos (eggs and almonds), Aletria (vermicelli) and Leite Creme (custard cream), as well as the famous Toucinho do Céu (sugar, eggs and almonds).
